Boxelder Bug Trap: Homemade & Commercial

There are many different methods to kill boxelder bugs. However, one of the lesser known and used methods is to trap boxelder bugs. There is a wide range of different boxelder bug traps, everything from home-made redneck ingenuity to commercially made boxelder traps. We'll run through the host of options you have for trapping boxelder bugs.

Homemade Boxelder Bug Traps

The one thing a boxelder bug can't resist is a bright, well lit and warm surface. You can especially use their love of warmth against them to trick them into swarming right where you want them, in your trap. In order to create the homemade boxelder trap you are going to want to get some extremely bright pieces of hard/construction paper. This homemade trap will work best if it is hung in a warm and well lit area of the home. Next cover the sides of the paper with petroleum jelly. The petroleum jelly will cause the boxelder bugs to become stuck to the paper and unable to escape. Placing the trap in a warm area will give you the best chance to capture a number of boxelder bugs.

One of the most effective are glue traps that you can place around your house in well trafficked areas by the pests. You can keep these commercial boxelder traps in place for days or weeks and simply throw out the glue trap once it's full Light traps are another option when trying to get rid of boxelder bugs. This trap again uses the insects interest in bright lights against it. The light traps will either lure the boxelder bug into a glue trap or if it is electrified it will zap the bug.
